The LED’s are soon obsolete

We all use the lovely LED (Light Emmiting Diode) into our little electronic gadgets such as VU-meters, power indicator and such devices. We used them for over 30 years because they consume little power, they come in diferrent sizes, shapes, light levels and colors.

That is all about to change because a new player is in town. From Luxim comes a new technology that is to replace, in the future, the LED’s. This high efficency technology is contained in a little pill-size bulb.

The high-end LED’s produce around 70 lumens per watt. An incandescent light-bol produces around 15 lumens per watt. The new Luxim plasma light bulb produces about 150 lumens per watt.

The light this little thing produces has a color rendering index (CIR) of 91, which is very nice.

The estimated life span of the plasma light bulb is somewhere around 20000 hours, and a relatively large amount of power can be pumped through them, allowing a tiny bulb to produce 30,000+ lumens (not something LEDs can do).

Apparently, Luxim wants to use it’s creation in projectors. They also consider other applications because, even a tiny bulb can produce as much light as a street lamp, so sky is the limit, assuming that the costs will be reduced.

• An RF (radio-frequency) signal is generated by the solid-state power amplifier and is guided into an electric field about the bulb. The high concentration of energy in the electric field vaporizes the contents of the bulb to a plasma state at the bulb’s center; this controlled plasma generates an intense source of light.
