PostNicEdit – New js WYSIWYG editor

logo I recently came across NicEdit’s webpage and I was pleasantly surprised of it’s size. I mean, it’s a WYSIWYG editor under 10Kb in size when compressed. It’s amazing.
I know what you’re thinking, that it doesn’t have all the features that it’s competitors (FCKEditor or HTMLarea), but it’s a great editor nonetheless.
Because it’s so small, you can increase the total loading time of your website considerably. I tested NicEdit and FCKEditor on my local server and I must say that the test page with NicEdit loaded instantaneously as it’s competitor’s test page which took aprox. 1.3 seconds to load.
Thou NicEdit is still under heavy development, I think it already is a great WYSIWYG editor.
Features (from developer’s website):

Refactored code with plugin based architecture with the following components:

  • Core (nicEditor.js, nicPanel.js, nicInstance.js, nicButton.js, nicPane.js)
  • Select Boxes (nicSelect.js)
  • Output Plugins
  • Tooltips Plugin
  • Advanced Buttons (Image/Link/ect.) Plugins

Users will customize their version to include only the required components, modules, and hopefully third party modules on the NicEdit site. The Core will form NicEdit Micro Editor with just basic rich text formatting controls for simple applications. A full edition including all plugins/buttons will be available similar to the current version of NicEdit.

  • XHTML Output Plugin/Cleanup (This might go in the core if small enough)
  • BBCode Output Plugin for using NicEdit in Forums
  • Better Documentation/More Examples
  • Undo/Redo, Unlink, Few More Buttons

Examples of implementation and usage are found on the NicEdit’s website. Go there now by clicking here.
